A Monkey After My Own Heart
I bought Grumpy Monkey thinking it would cheer my toddler up during tantrums… turns out it just gave her a role model. Now when she’s in a mood, she points to the monkey and says, “Me.” Thanks, I think? The illustrations are hilarious, the message is sweet (it’s okay to have a bad day!), and it somehow manages to entertain both my kid and my inner grumpy adult. I docked one star only because now I have to explain to my child that smashing bananas in anger is not “embracing his feelings.”Still, 10/10 would read again—just maybe with a side of patience.

Toddler present
Bought a number of books for my granddaughters (4 and 1). Grumpy Monkey was the favorite by a wide margin.

Grumpy Monkey is a great lesson on how to cope with a bad mood
Grumpy Monkey by Suzanne Lang is a wonderful examination of what it feels like to wake up on the wrong side of the bed. This message easily resonates with both parents and children alike, as everyone can relate to a time when they just felt “off” but didn’t really have a justifiable explanation as to why.Max Lang’s vibrant illustrations bring the theme of the story into existence in a way that is inviting and fun. The characters are drawn in a humorous yet unique way, which provides them with personality beyond the descriptions that are provided in the text. There are many moments where the illustrations of the grumpy monkey make us laugh while also making us sympathize with his sour mood.Overall, this is a wonderfully colorful and inviting picture book for parents and children alike. This book gives the reader permission to be grumpy and emphasizes the importance of accepting when our own moods are under the weather. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has children as it invites many important conversations on how to advocate for ourselves when we need time to reset our moods.
