You can chop up the cake or cut it into small pieces. The size is the same as the picture.

I believe it's a standard cake we get at the same place we get bird seed. The cake is 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 1 inch

Q: how is it squirrel proof?

It is squirrel proof, food could be in the feeder.

Q: What is the thickness of the seed cake/suet cage itself, not the overall thickness? The suet cakes I see available are 2 inches thick!

The area of the suet cake frame measures approximately 5x5x1 3/4 inches. I haven't had any issues with the standard square suet cakes not fitting my feeder, the type suet cake typically sold at farm supply, home supply, and mass merchandisers.
