The book it is very interesting to read. It has much to think about how the powerful ones during those years had the power in their hands to do whatever they wished. It is an open mind book. A MUST read book.

La isla bajo el mar is a fictional novel about slavery in the Caribbean. This event in history affected the lives of many people and in various ways still exists today in the world but masked in many different forms other than slaves working on a sugar cane plantation.The novel is set in eighteenth century Saint-Domingue which is modern day Haiti, and via the story the reader gets an understanding for the history of this Caribbean island under French rule at the time with political, economic and social issues that definitely shaped the outcome of modern day Haiti which is part of the island of Hispaniola.The characters are well developed and the reader immediately identifies with Zarite, the nine year old slave who is controlled by her French master Toulouse Valmorain. Her will power to be free and her struggle to achieve her freedom is the main theme of story. The other characters also intertwine well with the issues of the time which include race, social class and oppression.I think this novel is definitely a good addition to Isabel's collection with a very different theme as compared to her other novels and the ones I have read thus far. I am looking forward to her next one and most importantly what it will be about. For Allende fans La isla bajo el mar is worth the read. For history fans it's an interesting fictional account of slavery in the Caribbean and its social stigma and repercussions.

En el contexto de la emancipación de Haití y de la Louisiana de finales del s. XVIII y comienzos de XIX, la historia de la esclava Zarité describe la compleja relación entre las razas en América en ese entonces. Hermoso relato que transporta al lector a los ardientes cañaduzales de Saint Domingue, con toda la iniquidad de la esclavitud, y a la promiscua Nueva Orleans de comienzos del siglo XIX. Los personajes, bien logrados, transmiten claramente los sentimientos y la forma de pensar de los distintos grupos raciales de esa época turbulenta.

Es muy rapido para hablar del futuro que el destino le depara a esta obra. Sin embargo, puedo asegurar que entro a la literatura latinoamericana por la puerta grande. Se desarrolla en torno a las revueltas que condujeron con la Revolucion Haitiana. A mi entender, pierde un poco de fuerza en la parte media, pero el inicio y el final son de gran calidad. El modo en que Allende nos envuelve en en el manto historica de la colonia de Saint Domingue no deja espacios para dudas. El impacto y la fuerza de la narrativa no permiten desviarse de la lectura. Lo recomiendo con ahinco.It is too soon to talk about the future of this piece. Nonetheless, I can assure that it is already among the greatest pieces of Latin-American literature. It takes places in the times of the rebel slaves that claimed liberty and a more just system, the origins of the Haitian Revolution. Great beginning and terrific ending. The way she links those two is amazing. Recommended.

Excelente relato como todo lo que escribe Isabel Allende . La historia de los pueblos del Caribe es rica en muchos tópicos creo que iniciarla es fácil llegar al fondo es lo difícil.

Escogí este libro, porque era uno de los pocos que no había leído de Isabel Allende. El aspecto histórico de esa época en relación a Haití, Cuba, y Louisiana, lo conocía muy poco, no quiere decir que el leer esta novela satisfaga el nivel de información que requeriría un estudioso, pero como no lo soy, agradezco la apasionante novela,que graba mejor en mi mente, los aspectos básicos en el nacimiento y resultados, en lo que se refiere a evolución socio económica y cultural, de los diferentes sectores de esa zona del mundo, En forma relevante me aclara los motivos históricos de la pobreza extrema de Haití, y la incapacidad,de un sector aun muy importante de los Estadounidenses de superar sus intolerancias principalmente raciales, religiosas, culturales, de género y económicas, que rigen en gran parte su comportamiento paternalista, prepotente o francamente agresivo con otras naciones.Aunque casi todas las ediciones en este formato electrónico tienen errores ortográficos y de redacción, particularmente en esta novela son numerosos,

La isla bajo el mar (Vintage Espanol) (Spanish Edition) Me encanto este libro de Isabel Allende. Aprendi muchisimo sobre la historia de Haiti y de New Orleans. Aunque tenga mucho de ficcion, la mayoria de los datos que se revelan en esta novela son veridicos, no me cabe la menor duda. Ahora se por que se habla "frances" en Haiti, por que en New Orleans tambien se habla el "frances" o creole que se habla o se hablaba en Haiti. Como esa isla fue considerada por Francia uno de sus mayores tesoros que les dio dinero en cantidades mientras la manejaban en tiempos napoleonicos. De veras que vale la pena leer este libro, ahora me he interesado en leer mas acerca de esos viejos tiempos, gracias a este librito que casi lo paso por alto.Isabel Allende sigue siendo para mi una de mis preferidas escritoras latino-americanas. Se los recomiento!

Este es una historia muy conmovedora. Tete la niña esclava tiene que crecer y madurar con rapidez, sin demostrar nunca su desprecio por su amo. Esta novela me atrapo desde el principio, siempre te mantiene despierta en saber que sigue. Ademas tienes daros de hechos históricos que siempre me gusta saber. Habla de la esclavitud en Haití y su revolución para su independencia. Me dejo un vacío cuando se acabo, me quede pensando “y ahora que mas”, porque la vida continúa y yo quería continuar viviendo con sus personajes. Gracias Isabel Allende por tan buena novela.

One of the best novels I have ever read in Spanish. It covers a terribly difficult time in history for black people and how this slave was able to overcome so many adversities and atrocities to attain her freedom. It gives a brief insight into the Haitian and French Revolutions and their impact on slavery and the island and its people. It motivated me to want to learn more about this history and those persons who had the most influence..

Isabel's research is amazing - this book concerns French planters and their slaves in the Carribbean and then Louisianna, I had not realised how much events in France, such as the Revolution, influenced what happened out there. As usual Allende weaves a fascinating human story - humour and pathos, love and war, creating a vivid and exciting story.

I liked this book, mix of fiction and historic facts. Entertaining and quite on the line of Isabel Allende's style. Very cruel descriptions of the abuses against the slaves and sometimes very sad. I learnt a lot about a piece of history totally unknown to me. Good reading but the only con is the amazing amount of typos. I read it on Spanish as I assumed the author wrote it in Spanish but sometimes it looks more like a poor translation from another language. I have never come before through a book with so many typos (misspellings, duplicity of words, missing words and incomplete sentences). I read the kindle version maybe the non electronic format does not have so many mistakes.

As a student of Spanish I took the precaution of buying this book also in English.However, it was so good that I couldn't put it down and continued with the Spanish version.Of course there were words I needed to look up now and then but the story kept up the momentum sufficiently that it wasn't onerous.I loved it so much that I can't wait to read another I. Allende book.
