Extended the life of a Garmin Drivesmart GPS

I was about to buy a new Garmin Drivesmart 61 LMT because the battery on it had completely died and it would randomly switch itself off. It has lifetime map updates and worked fine except when it would randomly switch itself off and then refuse to immediately turn back on, so it seemed like a shame to just give up on it. I started doing some Internet research and confirmed that the battery was probably the problem. After figuring out that this was the correct part/equivalent for the Drivesmart 61 (more Internet research), I bought this and installed it and now the problems with the GPS appear to be gone. It works like new again. The screwdriver they provide works perfectly for the tiny torx screws on the back of the GPS. It's a cheap screwdriver, but it's exactly the right size, it did the job, and I appreciate that it was included. I even saved it in case I have to take one of these things apart again. The opening tool that is provided leaves a little bit to be desired, and broke as I was using it to pry the GPS open, but honestly anything including a thin store gift card or a guitar pick could be used to pry it open if the tool doesn't work. It was nice that the opening tool was also at least included and I did make some use of it.Time will tell if the battery lasts, but the problem appears to be fixed for now. I shopped around, and this kit appears to be very good value for money spent. If this battery lasts 2 or 3 years and it ever needs to be replaced again, I'll probably buy another one just like it.

Easy to install, longer battery life

The 6.5-y.o. 820 mAh OEM Garmin battery in my Drivesmart 61 - which I like a lot - would no longer hold a decent charge. While I almost always use it in-car with its AC adapter, I wanted to be able to carry the GPS around unattached. The screwdriver supplied with the battery kit is a T5 Torx; while it works, I used another T5 bit driver that was more comfortable. It took me about 30 min. in all to remove screws, carefully spudge open the case (being extra careful with the ribbon and wire connectors between the 2 halves!), pop off the battery connector, pry up the OEM battery, save & reinstall the sturdy 2-sided adhesive strip that holds the battery in place, re-connect the battery (I used some tweezers to seat the connector), blow out any pieces of the cheap-o kit spudge that broke off inside the case during opening, snap the case together, and reinstall the screws. Replacement battery is 900 mAh. There are online videos if you need detailed instructions. So far, so good! And now I can sleep nights, knowing that my GPS battery will hold a charge...

Not suited for colder region.

The battery cannot power the Drivesmart 61 for a minute. Amazon is exchanging it, I will return it if the replacement is just the same.Update:I received the replacement from Amazon, I installed it and got it fully charged in the GPS. I was able to turn it on and ran on the battery. Then I installed it in my car, it is about 35F inside the car, I turned it on once more just to verify it worked, it did. I then turned it off.Five hours later, I returned to the car, the GPS was completely dead, no power, not even a flicker on the device.I took the unit back inside and left it on the desk (not charging), two hours later, it powered up and the battery showed almost full. So, mystery solved, this battery is not suited for low temperature operation (unlike the original Garmin battery). As temperature drops, it cannot provide the current needed to power the GPS. This may very well explain why it works great for some and not others. If you live in an area that rarely see cold spells, this may be an option, if you live in an area that gets colder in the winter, you should shop for a different brand.

Much lower capacity than claimed

The replacement battery for my Garmin DriveSmart 61 claims it’s 900 mAh, but the much larger original is only 830 mAh. So, likely false advertising.Reattached in place with some double sided tape.Disassembly was fairly easy, just take your time to avoid stripping a screw or cracking the case. The plastic tool is fairly flimsy, and not sure if it will survive another replacement.

Daily use in work trucks w/o GPS; Last as long and OEM

--We have DriveSmart 65's in most of our trucks because there big, easy to read and tough and, when purchased Amazon Refurbished, about 1/2 price.--GPS is used daily in work trucks since mid 2020's. I've had to replace most of the Garmin OEM batteries 2-3 years of use.--These batteries are 900mAh (Garmin OEM are 820). They've all lasted at least as long as the OEM batteries with no issues as of May, 2025.--Hint: Fully charge replacement batteries befor use; Turn GPS off physically if your not going to use it for a while

Charge time

You're lucky to get 2 hours of play from a charge and difficult to replace even with a YouTube video.
